Start with your laptop
Write down the exact laptop model and the devices you want to connect. A USB-C connector does not, by itself, tell you whether a port supports video output, charging or a particular data speed. Check the laptop manual and the hub specification together. If your only problem is a missing USB-A port, a small adapter may be enough.
Match the working day
For a permanent desk, prioritize the ports you use simultaneously: display, keyboard, storage and Ethernet. For travel, weight and cable length matter more. A long list of ports is not useful if the hub cannot run your intended combination at once. Check supported display resolution and refresh rate for your operating system.
Read the small print
Look for a clear power-input requirement, the power available to the laptop and whether a charger is included. Sharing power across devices can change what is available to each one. A dock with an external supply can suit a fixed workspace, while a compact hub is easier to carry.
Before you order
Compare the model number, return window and compatibility notes on the actual listing. Keep the packaging until you have checked each port with your own equipment. Skip features you will not use; compatibility is a better reason to buy than the number of sockets.
