Measure your bag
Use the inside dimensions of your suitcase or backpack, accounting for wheels and handle channels. Packing cubes are useful when they fit the shape of the luggage. A set designed for a large suitcase may leave awkward gaps in a narrow backpack.
Choose your system
Group clothes by type, outfit or stage of the trip. A weekend bag may need only one or two cubes. Mesh panels help identify contents, while enclosed panels provide more coverage. A separate pouch for laundry can keep worn clothes apart without reorganizing the whole bag.
Compression has a tradeoff
Compression can reduce the space occupied by soft clothing, but it does not reduce weight. A tightly packed cube can also be less flexible around a curved suitcase edge. Check zipper construction and leave enough room to close it without forcing the teeth or seams.
Test before departure
Pack the items you intend to take and lift the bag before leaving. Keep travel documents and frequently used items accessible. Verify baggage size and weight limits directly with your carrier for your ticket. Start with a small set and add pieces only if your packing routine needs them.
