Plan the position
Sit at your desk and identify where you need extra light. Notice shadows from your hands and reflections on the screen. A lamp that looks attractive in a product photo may occupy the space you need for your keyboard. Measure the base area and the distance the arm needs to reach.
Check the adjustments
An adjustable arm helps direct light toward a notebook without shining into your eyes. Look at the hinge range, brightness controls and switch position. If you alternate between reading and video calls, being able to redirect the lamp may be more useful than decorative effects.
Base or clamp
A weighted base is easy to move, while a clamp saves surface space. Check desk thickness and the clearance below the tabletop before choosing a clamp. Glass, rounded edges and hollow furniture can need special consideration; follow the desk and lamp manufacturers’ guidance.
Compare ownership costs
Check whether the light source can be replaced, what power supply is needed and what is included. Confirm that the plug suits the location where the lamp will be used. Choose lighting for the task you perform, and assess the result in the room rather than assuming a photo represents the brightness you will see.
